ROHM has developed a 12W rated 0.85mm industry ultra-thin metal plate shunt resistor "PSR350"

The upcoming launch of 0.2m Ω products with a 15W rated power of the industry's ultra small "PSR330" and "PSR100"


The world-renowned semiconductor manufacturer ROHM (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan) has developed a 12W rated ultra-thin metal plate shunt resistor "PSR350" for high-power applications in automotive and industrial equipment. In addition, ROHM plans to launch 0.2m Ω products for the "PSR330" and "PSR100", which have reached the industry's ultra small level among the 15W rated power products, to further enhance the product lineup of the "PSR Series".

In the power module of industrial equipment, products with built-in shunt resistors have already appeared. In recent years, in the main drive inverter of xEV, in order to reduce the housing size, there has been a gradual increase in thin power modules equipped with heat dissipation mechanisms on both sides of the module, and the demand for built-in shunt resistors is also increasing. However, the thicker metal plate shunt resistors in the past may affect the heat dissipation efficiency of power devices. In addition, to reduce the thickness of shunt resistors, multiple welding materials need to be tested and evaluated. In this regard, ROHM utilizes the advantages of a vertically integrated production system to test various welding materials in small batches. Through a flexible development system that actively responds to market demand, we have successfully developed ultra-thin power shunt resistors in the industry.


Using the advantages of the ROHM vertically integrated production system, the PSR350 achieves a 0.85mm ultra-thin package with a rated power of 12W, which is about half the height of previous products, by optimizing materials and manufacturing processes. More and more automotive main drive inverters and other products are starting to use dual sided heat dissipation power modules, while the new products of ROHM make it possible to have built-in power device chips (IGBT or SiC MOSFET) and power shunt resistors, which will contribute to the miniaturization development of main drive inverters.


Like the PSR350, the PSR330 has reduced product size by optimizing materials and manufacturing processes, and is expected to achieve the industry's ultra small 6464 size (6.4mm) of its peers at a rated power of 15W × 6.4mm), with a size reduction of about 65% compared to previous products with equivalent power ratings, which is very helpful in reducing the installation area for various high-power applications.


At the same time, ROHM plans to expand the lower limit resistance value of the PSR100 from the previous 0.3 m Ω to 0.2 m Ω, and introduce corresponding new products to support larger current detection applications.


The new product "PSR350" has been put into mass production with a monthly output of 1 million units (the sample price is 500 yen per unit, excluding tax). In addition, the 0.2m Ω products of "PSR330" and "PSR100" are planned to start providing samples in November 2023. The production base for the early and late stages of these new products is ROHM Integrated Systems (Thailand) Co., Ltd.


In the future, ROHM will continuously improve the performance of metal plate shunt resistors, and continue to contribute to the miniaturization and energy-saving of high-power applications.


<About the PSR Series>


The PSR series is the metal plate shunt resistor series with the highest power range covered by ROHM, and its application consultation in vehicle and industrial equipment with continuously increasing power is increasing day by day. Generally, there is a trade-off between the rated power of a resistor and product size, and it is generally considered difficult to ensure that both values meet the requirements at the same time. The advantage of ROHM lies in the vertically integrated production system, which can shorten the development cycle through small batch trial production. Through optimization of materials and manufacturing processes, high rated power is achieved in a small size. Moreover, compared to ordinary products with the same rated power, the resistance temperature coefficient of the new product is also significantly reduced, which will contribute to the miniaturization and reliability improvement of application products.
