Bosch Launches Visual Perception Software Module Decoupled from Hardware

Release Time:2023-09-04
Share:

Fundamentals of auxiliary driving and auto drive system

For SAE L0-L4 level autonomous driving, visual perception of the vehicle's surrounding environment is the foundation of assistance, autonomous driving, and parking functions

The Bosch visual perception software module decoupled from hardware can be applied to various systems on chip (SoC)

Customers can integrate product technologies from different sources to create personalized solutions that better meet their own needs

Faced with a monotonous driving environment, long journeys, and traffic congestion, many drivers hope to have the energy to take care of other things besides paying attention to the road conditions during the driving process. Bosch is building a technological foundation for its increasingly enhanced autonomous driving capabilities, allowing drivers to quickly avoid the need to pay attention to road conditions. In the development of assisted driving towards autonomous driving, environmental perception based on video images plays a crucial role. Reliable information about the vehicle's surrounding environment ensures automatic, safe, and easy driving. Bosch not only provides solutions for hardware and software collaboration, but also introduces a visual perception software module that is decoupled from hardware. This module can be deployed on various systems on chip (SoC), providing automotive manufacturers with extremely high flexibility. At the 2023 German International Auto and Smart Mobility Expo (IAA Mobility 2023), Bosch will showcase this visual perception software module for the first time, and its hardware camera equipment will also be showcased to the public for the first time.

Software becomes the determining factor for autonomous driving

Drivers expect their vehicles to continuously update and iterate like smartphones. In the future, new features of vehicles can be downloaded like mobile applications without the need for hardware replacement. The future of mobile travel is defined by software. We are optimizing the product portfolio of driving assistance systems and providing customers with solutions that accurately meet their needs, "said Christoph Hartung, President of Bosch's Intelligent Driving and Control Business Unit. This business unit is driving the development of Bosch's assistance and autonomous driving business. In the development process of this business, software is becoming a determining factor in the development of automotive electronic systems, especially driving assistance systems. In view of this, Bosch is expanding its product portfolio in the fields of assistance, autonomous driving, and parking. In the future, Bosch software and hardware components will be sold separately.

Software for achieving visual perception

In the fields of assisted driving and autonomous driving, in addition to radar and ultrasound, vision based sensors are another way for vehicles to perceive the surrounding environment. Bosch's software can process image data captured by multiple sensors, including Bosch's new cameras, and apply it to advanced driving assistance functions related to driving and parking. This expands the possibilities for enhancing driving and riding safety related functions. It not only includes automatic braking during driving or reversing, but also convenient functions such as adaptive cruise control, active lane changing, and parking assistance, as well as automatic driving functions for highways, suburbs, and cities. In terms of target detection and classification, Bosch's software is mainly implemented through artificial intelligence technologies such as deep neural networks. Bosch can train relevant neural networks through databases around the world, taking into account the specific local needs of each country during the development process.

From a single component to a complete solution

We have identified a trend where customers no longer choose to purchase the full range of sensors and software and hardware products provided by suppliers, but rather prefer software or hardware solutions that are compatible with their competitors' products. In this situation, the industry not only values hardware compatibility, but also emphasizes the independence of software from hardware and operating systems, "said Sven Lanwer, head of the Business Unit for Bosch Intelligent Driving Experience (ADAS).

Bosch has been deeply involved in the development and application of a complete camera system for driving assistance for many years, and excels in the development and integration of specific application software. One of Bosch's major advantages is the combination of software and hardware expertise. Bosch will also continue to develop new intelligent sensors equipped with embedded software. Customers can create personalized, modular, and scalable solutions by combining the camera module with the advanced driving assistance system integration platform - a high-performance computer developed by Bosch for the advanced driving assistance system domain.

Provide one-stop hardware and software expertise

Whether it's sensors, on-board computers, or software solutions, Bosch has the one-stop development and production capabilities for key components required for modern cars. This also includes automotive control units with an annual output of over 250 million sets integrated with Bosch self-developed software. In addition, Bosch is also proficient in another increasingly important field: integrating software from different sources and promoting collaboration in the automotive and information technology industries. Bosch has integration expertise in this area.
