TDK releases a new ASIL C-class robust 3D HAL sensor for automotive and industrial application scenarios

HAL 3930-4100 (single chip) and HAR 3930-4100 (dual chip) are two precise Hall effect position sensors with robust stray field compensation capabilities and equipped with PWM or SENT output interfaces


Single chip sensors have been defined as ASIL Class C and can be integrated into automotive safety related systems, up to ASIL Class D


The target automotive application scenarios include steering angle position detection, transmission position detection, shifter position detection, chassis position detection, throttle and brake pedal position detection**


TDK Corporation (TSE: 6762) has further expanded the Micronas 3D HAL by utilizing the new HAL 3930-4100 and HAR 3930-4100 * for automotive and industrial applications ® Position sensor series. Both sensors have precise position detection capabilities and robust stray field compensation capabilities, and provide flexible digital output interfaces for PWM or SENT. According to ISO 26262, single chip products have been defined as SEooC (independent safety unit) ASIL C-level and can be integrated into automotive safety related systems up to ASIL D-level. Sensors are suitable for applications such as steering angle position detection, transmission position detection, shifter position detection, throttle and brake pedal position detection Planned to start production in January 2024; Samples are now available upon request.

Both sensors provide user configurable PWM or SENT output interfaces, which improves adaptability. In addition, the sensor also incorporates switch outputs with multifunctional high/low side switch configurations. The switch signal comes from calculated position data or other sources along the device signal path, such as temperature or magnetic field amplitude. As ASIL C-level devices, both HAL 3930-4100 and HAR 3930-4100 undergo self checks during startup and normal operation to improve their reliability. These tests aim to prevent sensors from giving incorrect readings or reporting errors through the SENT interface or PWM interface according to the SENT standard.


HAR 3930-4100 is a dual chip version of HAL 3930-4100 that provides complete redundancy. The sensor is equipped with two independent chips stacked on top of each other, but they are separated mechanically and electrically. Two chips can ensure synchronous output signals when measuring almost the same magnetic field. This redundant design is located within a single package, achieving the dual goal of reducing system costs and improving overall reliability. Smaller PCBs and fewer solder joints further enhance the reliability of the system. HAR 3930-4100 uses a compact SSOP16 package, while single-chip devices use a SOIC8 package.


HAL 3930-4100 and HAR 3930-4100 offer a wide range of measurement capabilities, such as 360 ° angle measurement, linear motion tracking, and providing 3D position data for magnets. This type of 3D position information can be transmitted through SENT or two PWM outputs. In addition, the two sensors also have modular functionality, mainly customized for chassis position sensor application scenarios. This feature helps to divide the 360 ° measurement range into smaller and more accurate ones, such as 90 °, 120 °, and 180 °.


In addition, the on-chip signal processing function can calculate two angles from the magnetic field component and convert them into digital output signals. This flexible feature allows customers to optimize basic parameters such as gain, offset, and reference position through non-volatile memory programming, ensuring seamless alignment with specific magnetic circuit requirements.
