ST's 100W and 65W VIPerGaN power conversion chips save space and improve energy efficiency in consumer electronics and industrial applications

The Italian semiconductor high-voltage wide bandgap power conversion chip series has added two new products, VIPerGaN100 and VIPerGaN65, suitable for single switch quasi resonant (QR) flyback power converters with maximum power of 100W and 65W. The target applications of this compact and highly integrated product design include USB-PD chargers, home appliances, intelligent building controllers, lighting, air conditioning, smart meters, and other industrial applications such as switch mode power supplies (SMPS).

Each device integrates a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller and a 650V enhanced GaN power transistor, which can be used as a standard optocoupler to achieve secondary side voltage stabilization function. 5mm x 6mm QFN compact package, combined with high integration, ensures that transistors have excellent power density and saves bill of materials (BoM) costs. Wide bandgap transistor technology can improve energy efficiency and simplify thermal management design.

These converter chips adopt advanced power management technology, with low static current and standby power consumption below 30mW in adaptive burst mode. Each product has a quasi resonant mode with dynamic blanking time and valley synchronization function, which can reduce switch losses and maximize energy efficiency under all input line and load conditions. These energy efficiency advantages help target applications reduce energy consumption and meet the energy-saving and net zero carbon emissions goals of global ecological design standards.

The chip also integrates safety protection and reliability functions, such as output overvoltage protection, current detection, input overvoltage protection, power on protection, power off protection, and thermal shutdown, as well as frequency jitter technology used to suppress EMI. Among them, input voltage feedforward compensation can minimize peak power changes.

VIPerGaN100 and VIPerGaN65 are now in production, both in 5mm x 6mm QFN packaging.
