Flexible OLED technology applied to automotive lighting
OLED technology has brought new choices to light source design and sparked great interest from customers in the automotive industry. OLED is a planar light source that can emit more monochromatic light and achieve independent stepless dimming.
Rapid development of OLED technology lights
Another admirable feature of this technology is its flexibility. In addition to flexible bending, cuts may also appear in the OLED lighting area. As part of the R2D2 project supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), research on flexible OLEDs has been carried out, bringing a new design perspective to designers. Osram has created flexible and three-dimensional OLED modules for Haila, and integrated OLED into the rear lights according to Audi's design.
Flexible OLEDs include three independent and controllable adjustment zones, so they do not require any mirrors, lighting guides, or similar optical components to be visible from different viewing angles. The taillight display device launched by Osram uses a precision steel base, which is sturdy and durable, making it very suitable for use in cars.
Now, the light emitted by flexible OLEDs has met the relevant ECE lighting intensity standards and taillight emission color standards. After the successful completion of the project, the first batch of models equipped with OLED headlights based on durable glass have been launched in a low-key manner, and flexible OLEDs are expected to achieve mass production in the coming years.
Osram and R2D2 projects
As a well-known OLED lighting manufacturer, Osram directly participated in this project and conducted a rapid and extensive evaluation of the project results. The taillight display device equipped with flexible OLED mentioned earlier was completed within the framework of this research project.
R2D2 will help the public understand the role of organic light-emitting diodes in lighting applications, promote technological progress, and enhance the competitiveness of German enterprises.
