Ames Osram's ultra-low noise AFE sensor technology helps enhance the ability of wearable devices to monitor vital signs

The all-new highly integrated and ultra-low power AS7058 supports precision PPG applications, electrocardiogram and skin electric activity measurement;

The world's leading optical solution provider, Ames Osram (Swiss Stock Exchange stock code: AMS), announced today the launch of the Ultra Low Noise Analog Front End (AFE) sensor - AS7058. This product not only extends the battery life of smartwatches, smart rings, and other wearable devices, but also improves the accuracy and reliability of vital sign measurements obtained from Photoplethysmography (PPG) or electrical signals.

The all-new AS7058 introduces body impedance measurement function for body composition analysis, opening up new possibilities for various wearable products.


The ultra-low noise characteristic of AS7058 brings an ultra-high optical signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB. Compared with competitors, AS7058 has significantly improved its PPG measurement performance in parameters such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and blood pressure. AS7058 excels in optical noise performance, thanks to the introduction of multiple research and development achievements, including the integration of two low-noise 20 bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), the use of integrated low-noise LED drivers, and the introduction of a new automatic ambient light offset correction technology.


The high signal-to-noise ratio of AS7058 also helps wearable devices maintain signal integrity while allowing them to manipulate LEDs at lower currents, effectively reducing power consumption.


Florian Lex, Product Marketing Manager of Ames Osram, stated: "If the health monitoring results of a smartwatch can rise from approximate indicators reflecting health status factors to data with medical operability, the value of the product to consumers will be greatly increased. Reducing the optical noise base of PPG measurement, enabling smartwatches, smart rings, and other wearable devices to obtain higher quality vital sign data, is exactly the goal of AS7058."


Highly integrated optoelectronic measurement functions


AS7058 integrates a complete set of photoelectric measurement functions for vital signs, including:


Two current sinks are used to drive eight LED emitters (each current sink is used for four LED emitters);


Eight photodiode inputs;


Two 20 bit ADCs for PPG measurement;


A 20 bit digital to analog converter (DAC) for electrical measurements (electrocardiography ECG, body impedance measurement BIO-Z, or electrodermal activity EDA). The electrocardiogram measurement level of this device reaches medical grade and complies with the IEC 60601-2-47 standard.


Two PPG ADCs simultaneously perform photodiode data acquisition. PPG and electrocardiogram measurements can also be synchronized to achieve blood pressure measurement.


The rich functions of AS7058 are integrated into a compact WLCSP chip, with a size of only 2.8mm × 2.5mm × 0.5mm.

AS7058 belongs to the extensive optoelectronic product range of Ames Osram, which provides comprehensive component and system expertise for vital sign monitoring of consumer electronics products.
