What is the driving route, what is the driving speed, is there a vehicle approaching from the other side, and what is the distance between the vehicle you are driving and other vehicles? After three years of research, an intelligent high-resolution headlight that can continuously analyze driving and weather conditions has been introduced. This achievement has brought adaptive front lighting into a new stage of development.


As the overall leader of the research and a member of the research consortium, Osram has successfully completed the development of an intelligent high-resolution LED headlight base. The display model was jointly developed with project partners such as Daimler, Fraunhofer, Hella, and Infineon, and was jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).


Independent adaptive intelligent pixel headlights that can achieve optimal lighting effects


Both types of headlights contain three LED light sources, each with 1024 independently controllable point light sources (pixels). This means that the headlights can accurately adapt to specific traffic conditions, ensuring optimal lighting effects are maintained at all times, and not making other drivers feel the glare of the light.


Innovative advantages


When driving at high speeds, the range of high beam illumination will automatically increase. On the other hand, when driving in the city, the light width will increase, illuminating the road ahead while also enhancing the lighting of the side and surrounding areas, increasing the safety factor. These functions are all completed through electronic components without the use of any mechanical actuators. With the help of anti glare high beams, drivers are expected to achieve optimal nighttime lighting without any adverse effects on other drivers. For drivers, the biggest benefit is the clear lighting effect during nighttime driving, which can effectively reduce the risk of accidents.


This lamp can take into account all bends in the road and adjust accordingly, thus illuminating all surrounding areas. In addition, car sensors also analyze the surrounding environment to illuminate the opposite vehicle. This way, the driver can see these vehicles more clearly. At the same time, the beam of the headlights will not shine on the head of the driver of the opposite vehicle, so it will not make the driver feel dazzled. With such flexible headlights, driving on rural roads no longer requires dimming the headlights.


Same size, higher resolution


In the current market for adaptive headlights, some LED components are installed side by side in the headlights. Additional electronic components need to be installed to control the switch of the light source.


The headlight space is limited, so there are also restrictions on the number of light sources. In the new design, the power switch device of the LED is integrated into the chip, which can achieve higher resolution and meet spatial requirements. The LED module is equipped with electrical and thermal sensing interfaces, which can be directly connected to automotive electronic devices.
